Yemeni Riot Police Fail to Break Up Shi’ite Rebel Protest

Yemeni riot police using tear gas and water cannons failed to break up a protest by Shi’ite Houthi rebels who are blocking the main road between the capital, Sana’a, and the airport.

One report says a protester was killed while others were treated for inhaling tear gas.

Yemeni jets also attacked rebels in the northern al-Jawf province Sunday, killing at least 13.

The Houthis are demanding the government resign and that fuel subsidies that held down gasoline and oil prices be reinstated.

President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi fired his Cabinet last week, but promises of a new prime minister and a pledge to include the Houthis in a new unity government have failed to stem the protests.
